There's a version of you that only generative work brings out: seeing what's emerging, synthesizing it, authoring an original future, then mobilizing towards it. Execution gravity crowds that out, but the loss isn't simplistic "maturity." Reclaiming it means an identity shift: not an operator who sometimes dreams, but a generative leader who owns execution too.
As the world accelerates, your generative, future-facing thinking is more essential than ever. And harder to access, as execution gravity and your own vigilance divert attention to current operations. The answer is practices and supporting architecture that let you lead the firm to the next horizon.
Your nose is pressed against a future that's stampeding, unclear, and fragmented. The old playbook — more analysis, more certainty before acting — can't keep pace. Strategic planning — templates, KPIs, budgets — isn't strategy, which guides major decisions and empowers others with clear intent. Treat it like a team contact sport: name the disagreements you've avoided, argue them out in person, then commit. That's the leadership team's one job.
